Dry needling uses very small diameter needles which are inserted through the skin into affected structures in order to provide relief and healing. As with any needle puncture, there are risks involved. Generally, dry needling is a safe and evidenced based practice with minimal risk. Risks may include soreness, stiffness, bruising, bleeding. In very rare cases, there have been cases of pneumothorax, nerve puncture, or spreading of an internal infection. In cases of infection, the organisms are typically already under the patient’s skin and flared up by insertion of the needle which stimulates blood flow and not by the needle pushing an organism into the skin.
There are certain diseases which do not respond well to needling and times when it is not advised, such as if a person has uncontrolled bleeding issues.
Dry needles are typically 0.18-0.3mm in diameter. Facial needles are smaller. As a comparison, vaccine needles are typically 0.64mm and typical injection needles are 0.8mm thick. Blood donation needles are 1.6mm thick.
Dry needles are 1/3 to 1/2 the thickness of vaccine needles.
Speak to your practitioner if you have any concerns before your treatment. If dry needling is not advised, there may be other treatments offered or referred. These may include stabilization training, manual therapy, cupping, flexibility, neurological re-education or a referral to the appropriate practitioner for your ailment.
